Meet the

Minstrels

Minstrel Mas can be traced back to the racist minstrel character popularized in the southern United States at the turn of the 20th century. The original portrayal was that of a while man, with a black painted face insulting the character and personality of Afro-descent people as feeble minded, simple and cheerfully submissive. It’s speculated it was imported to the island by the planter class but was eventually the caricature was cleverly subverted with the invention of the white minstrel- afro men in “white face” mocking the white man, mocking them. Usually outfitted in striped, scissors tail jackets, trousers, white gloves, and a straw hat.
