JAB JAB, creolized French meaning “Diable Diable ” is a form of pretty devil mas fashioned after a medieval court jester. The costume usually consists of satin tights and a satin two-toned jacket pointed at the waist- adorned with bells, decorative stones, gems, and mirrors as well as a painted mask. But the most defining costume element is the menacing whip, for despite its characterization as “pretty” this is a serious fighting mas that’s often extensively trained for. Like other forms of devil mas, it’s taken up with great reverence. Aspiring Jabs Jabs undergo intense training as a spiritual preparation for their encounters with rival bands. Trinidadian East Indian communities have long practiced and upheld this sacred tradition and masquerade.
