Meet the

Baby Doll

The BABY DOLL masquerader wears a bonnet, dress and carries a doll. The masquerade consists of running up to men in mock search of the father of her bastard child, shaming the male crowd member to give her money for her baby. This mas character parodies a legacy of enslavement in which many women mothered children by slave masters and others in the upper class thought of as respectable, only for their children to be unacknowledged. Others interpret it as women looking for the fathers of their children that they were separated from under the tyranny of enslavement. It expresses a tormenting experience in a satirical way to provide catharsis.
